Unit 11: Cách dùng one/ another/ other/ the other/ others/ the others [Ngữ pháp bổ trợ Part 2 - Describe a picture]

Đối với bài thi TOEIC Speaking Part 2 (Response to Questions), các từ như another, other, others... thường xuất hiện trong các câu hỏi về sự lựa chọn hoặc phương án thay thế. Bẫy ở đây không nằm ở ngữ pháp đơn thuần mà nằm ở sự bẫy về ngữ nghĩa và ngữ cảnh mà người ra đề thiết kế để khiến bạn trả lời sai trọng tâm.

I. Nhóm từ đóng vai trò Tính từ (Bổ nghĩa cho danh từ)

Khi các từ này đứng trước một danh từ, chúng đóng vai trò là tính từ. Quy tắc chọn lựa phụ thuộc vào số lượng và sự xác định của danh từ phía sau.

Từ Vai trò Cách dùng Ví dụ
Another Tính từ + Danh từ số ít (đếm được). Nghĩa là: Một cái khác. Please send me another report.
Other Tính từ + Danh từ số nhiều hoặc không đếm được. Nghĩa là: Những cái khác. We need to consider other factors.
The other Tính từ + Danh từ số ít hoặc số nhiều. Dùng khi chỉ đối tượng còn lại cuối cùng (xác định). One manager is here, the other manager is on leave.

 Bẫy: Another có thể đi với danh từ số nhiều nếu có số đếm ở giữa. Ví dụ: Another 3 days (thêm 3 ngày nữa).

II. Nhóm từ đóng vai trò Đại từ (Đứng độc lập)

Khi các từ này đứng một mình (không có danh từ theo sau), chúng đóng vai trò là đại từ. Lúc này, bạn không được phép đặt danh từ phía sau chúng.

Từ Cách dùng Ví dụ
Another Thay thế cho 1 danh từ số ít đã nhắc tới trước đó. This cake is good. I'll have another.
Others = Other + Danh từ số nhiều. Nghĩa là: những cái khác. Some students like tea, others prefer coffee.
The others = The other + Danh từ số nhiều. Dùng để chỉ những cái còn lại cuối cùng trong một nhóm. I have 5 pens. 2 are blue, the others are red.

III. Mẹo "Vàng" để không "sập bẫy" khi thi Speaking:

  • Nghe kỹ mạo từ "The":

    • Nếu có "The" (The other/The others): Luôn trả lời về phần còn lại cuối cùng trong một nhóm đã xác định (thường là 2 hoặc một số lượng hữu hạn).

    • Nếu không có "The": Trả lời mang tính gợi ý, mở rộng hoặc lựa chọn khác.

  • Đừng trả lời "Yes/No" với câu hỏi lựa chọn: Những câu hỏi có Another/Other thường yêu cầu thông tin cụ thể. Trả lời "Yes" cho một câu hỏi "Would you like another one?" là cực kỳ thiếu tự nhiên và mất điểm trầm trọng.

  • Tận dụng câu hỏi để trả lời: Hãy lặp lại một phần từ khóa trong câu hỏi để đảm bảo bạn đang trả lời đúng đối tượng.

    • Q: Do you have another copy of the report?

    • A: Yes, I do have another copy right here.
